Students (primarily intercollegiate athletes) from ACC universities spend three summer weeks in Vietnam. While there, partnering with native instructors, they coach hundreds of middle school children not only about sport but also about the virtues of college. In Summer 2013 (the sixth year of the program), more than 25 ACC students coached about 400 Vietnamese middle schoolers.
A detailed description of, and rationale for, the program is available here. The substantial impact of the program upon participants is personally documented in a brief PowerPoint presentaton. Program activities and facilities are show in a video from 2011.
In addition to general administrative support (the ACCIAC's portion is $75,000), the CFC requires of each American Participant $2600 from his/her home university and $1600 raised by the participating student. The level of involvement varies among ACC universities, depending upon the number of $2600 each can fund. (Students from all ACC universities may apply for one the "at large" $2600 awards funded by the ACCIAC.)
ACC students interested in becoming a part of the program should consult their CFC liaison and/or "their" ACCIAC Advisory Committee Member. To learn more about this opportunity, check out the Coach for College website.
