Distinguished Lecturers Program
Summary: Each year five outstanding faculty members are chosen as an ACC Distinguished Lecturer. These scholars are invited to make special presentations (a la Phi Beta Kappa Lecturers) by other ACC universities.
Objectives and Outcomes:
- Recognize outstanding faculty
- Seed cross ACC collaborations, including research grants
- Provide unique expertise to the host campus (i.e. the lecture itself)
- Increase the visibility of and respect for the scholar’s home university
Program Features and Mechanics:
*Each year five of our 15 university provosts will name an outstanding faculty member as an ACC Distinguished Lecturer.
- 2014-15 Cohort: Boston College, Clemson, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Wake Forest
- 2015-16 Cohort: Florida State, Miami, NC State, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech
- 2016-17 Cohort: Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia
*Factors to be considered (by provosts) in the selection include
- Likely interest from other campuses in the lecturer
- Likely willingness of the lecturer to be available to other ACC universities
- Likely impact of the scholar upon students & faculty at the host institution
- Likely opportunity to stimulate cross-campus collaborations
- Achievements, reputation of the scholar to be honored
- Desire to recognize, compensate the scholar
*For each named lecturer his/her university will be awarded $5000. The scholar’s home university will make this $5000 available for the benefit of the lecturer (e.g., add on stipend, a discretionary spending account, etc.).
*The expectation is that each scholar will, if invited and available, arrange to schedule lectures at other ACC universities. Each invited lecture will carry an additional stipend of $1,000 plus expenses.
*Each of the 15 ACC universities receives $2500 from the consortium in order to cover the stipend (of the lecturer they choose to invite) and associated costs of hosting the speaker.
*Scholars will be highlighted on the consortium website and possibly in some athletic tournament programs.
*Total budget is $62,500 per year (5 x $5000) + (15 x $2500).
*The first 10 lecturers should visit host campuses during the 2015-16 or 2016-17 academic years.
*It’s anticipated that each scholar will receive 1-5 invitations to lecture. Scholars may accept as many, or as few invitations, as desired.
*Program will be evaluated after 3 years.
